Why one of crypto’s best-funded IP chains gave up its own blockchain

Sui Foundation is investing $30 million as DATA Network, formerly Story Protocol, retires its own Layer 1 and moves to Sui.

A foundation tied to the Sui blockchain is paying $30 million as DATA Network, the protocol once known as Story Protocol, gives up running its own blockchain, Sui announced on its blog.

The deal is the sharper end of an argument the project has been making about chain economics. A DATA Foundation spokesperson said in an interview that running a dedicated blockchain for a single use case meant carrying the costs of validators, network security and infrastructure. As the project’s Trace registry grew past 270 million registrations in roughly four months, the spokesperson said, an independent chain for one use case no longer made sense.

Trace, launched in June, tracks the origin and licensing rights of AI training data. That volume alone is the point of the story: the registry is the business, and the blockchain under it was overhead. One published count of the same registry puts it above 250 million on-chain registrations, so the exact figure sits between the two.

Whether the $30 million shaped the decision is harder to pin down. Asked how much the investment influenced the move, a DATA Foundation representative said the investment was a separate part of the partnership. That is the company’s own framing, not an independent account, and no structure, token details or vesting terms for the money were disclosed.

The migration answers a question the spokesperson addressed directly: why rebuild storage and access control from scratch when the target chain already ships them. “Building storage and access control at that scale ourselves would have meant rebuilding what Sui already has in Walrus and Seal,” the spokesperson said. Walrus, a decentralized storage platform in the Sui network, becomes the default storage layer for DATA Foundation’s applications.

The shift caps a fast reinvention. The project launched in February 2025 as Story Protocol, an EVM-compatible Layer 1 for programmable intellectual property and automated licensing. On June 25, 2026 it rebranded to the DATA Foundation, with holders of the IP token swapped 1:1 into the new DATA token, pivoting to a full stack for AI training data as demand rose from developers who wanted datasets that are verifiable and gathered with consent.

Under the terms both sides stated, DATA Network keeps operating until the migration upgrade completes, and the partners said a detailed timeline and a holder transition plan will be published before the upgrade. The economics that made a dedicated chain uneconomical, in the spokesperson’s telling, apply to any project running a blockchain for a single use case, and this is the first well-funded one to walk it back.
