Uniswap Arrives on CME With Record Revenue Behind It as UNI Becomes First DeFi Token on the Exchange

CME Group launched Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures with an inaugural FalconX-GSR block trade, making UNI the first DeFi protocol token with CME futures.

CME Group has launched futures on Uniswap’s UNI token and on Bitcoin Cash, and Uniswap says UNI is now the first DeFi protocol token to carry a futures contract on the Chicago exchange operator.

The contracts went live with an inaugural block trade between the crypto market makers FalconX and GSR, which CME Group announced in its statement on the first trade for Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on October 20. “Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures contracts are officially live, marked by the inaugural block trade between FalconX and GSR,” CME Group said in a post on X. A block trade is a privately negotiated transaction cleared through the exchange, and market makers taking the first side of it points to early institutional interest.

Uniswap announced the milestone on October 19, a day before CME Group’s first-trade announcement, and the exact hour of launch differs between the two parties’ posts. Uniswap’s statement is the firmer one for the DeFi claim: “UNI is now the first DeFi protocol token with futures on @CMEGroup.” DeFi tokens have long traded as perpetual swaps on offshore venues, so the distinction is specific to CME: a US-regulated exchange clearing dated futures on a DeFi governance token for the first time.

The listing caps a run for Uniswap Labs toward traditional finance. The protocol reportedly took in a record $14.81 million in monthly protocol revenue in September, driven largely by activity on Robinhood Chain, and a fee switch and $100 million burn proposal drew UNI buyers in December. A cleared futures contract gives institutions a way to hedge or hold UNI exposure without touching a DeFi venue, the same regulated access Bitcoin and Ether futures gave those desks years ago.

For CME Group, the launch extends a year of steady expansion beyond its core Bitcoin and Ether contracts. The exchange added derivatives on Cardano, Chainlink and Stellar in January, and DeFi tokens moving toward equity-style economics now have a regulated derivatives venue to match. CME Group also lists a Micro UNI futures product, a smaller contract aimed at retail-scale positions.

Contract sizes for the standard and Micro UNI futures, settlement mechanics and first-session volumes are not yet published. The contracts are available to traders with CME access, subject to local derivatives eligibility.
