Ethereum ‘Trustless Agent’ Standard Set for Mainnet; ETH Reclaims $3,000
Backed by Google and Coinbase, the new ERC-8004 standard solves the ‘trust gap’ for AI agents, paving the way for a decentralized machine economy.
The Lede
Ethereum officially confirmed on January 28 that ERC-8004, the protocol’s new standard for autonomous AI agents, is imminent for Mainnet launch. The announcement, which signals a pivot toward standardized machine-to-machine commerce, coincided with Ether (ETH) reclaiming the $3,000 level ($3,014, +3.5%) after a week of downward pressure. The standard is backed by a coalition of heavyweights including the Ethereum Foundation, Coinbase, Google, and MetaMask.
The Standard: Identity & Reputation
ERC-8004 addresses the primary bottleneck in the AI agent economy: trust. Currently, agents operate in siloed environments without a verifiable on-chain history. This standard introduces two critical primitives:
- Discovery Mechanism: A universal registry allowing agents to find one another across different organizations.
- Portable Reputation: A verified track record of an agent’s past behavior, enabling counterparties to assess risk before engaging.
By moving identity and reputation on-chain, the standard allows an agent trained by one entity to securely interact with a service deployed by another, without requiring a centralized intermediary to broker the trust.
The Context: The x402 Connection
ERC-8004 is not launching in a vacuum. It is designed to function alongside x402, a payment protocol developed by Coinbase engineers that revives the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code for AI micropayments. While ERC-8004 handles the “Who are you?” and “Are you reliable?”, x402 handles the settlement.
“ERC-8004 ties these together. Agents gain neutral rails for identity and reputation, while the Ethereum ecosystem gains a shared substrate for payments, validation, and governance.”
, Davide Crapis, Ethereum Foundation AI Lead
Outlook: Genesis Month
Developers are flagging February as “genesis month” for the decentralized AI stack. The combination of portable identity (ERC-8004) and frictionless payments (x402) creates the first complete infrastructure for an autonomous agent economy. Market participants should monitor agent-centric infrastructure tokens as the standard moves from proposal to active deployment.
