BNY Turns Tokenized Treasuries Into Wall Street Plumbing With Citadel Securities Repo Test
BNY and Citadel Securities completed a transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasuries, demonstrating faster collateral movement between settlement and financing.
BNY and Citadel Securities have completed a transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasuries, the bank said in a press release Tuesday.
To see why the largest custody bank would bother, it helps to look at what the repo market is. Banks and trading firms use U.S. government bonds as collateral to secure short-term loans and fund their trading. In triparty transactions, a form of that short-term financing, a bank manages the collateral between borrowers and lenders.
The BNY-Citadel Securities transaction moved tokenized government bonds from settlement into financing, a workflow the two firms said would potentially let market participants reuse collateral sooner and free up cash for other trades. That lag between a bond settling and it being available to back a loan is where capital sits idle today, and it is precisely the friction tokenization is meant to remove.
“Efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets,” Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities, said in the announcement. BNY’s chief innovation and market transformation officer, Carolyn Weinberg, framed the test the same way: a tokenized Treasury that can serve in both settlement and financing points toward a more connected, always-on financial system.
For the crypto industry, the significance is less the transaction itself than who ran it. Asset managers and banks including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and JPMorgan have already moved into tokenized funds and securities, wagering that the technology cuts settlement delays, strips manual steps out of custody and lets assets change hands faster. A completed repo workflow adds the market’s core financing machinery to that list, moving tokenization from product experiments into back-office infrastructure.
BNY said it intends to roll out further digital cash and tokenized deposit features that work with blockchain settlement and financing. The size of the completed transaction and the platform used were not disclosed.
The bank also said it expects to keep its systems for handling Fed-eligible securities and triparty repo open for longer each day, with plans to cover European and Asian trading hours by next year.
